wow, UNC really is everywhere

This is the first day of the visualization conference proper. Until now it's been two smaller sub-conferences, both very cool in their own right.

I came downstairs for the morning session and found that there was at least one UNC person (current student, faculty, or alumnus) visible no matter where I looked. Now, granted, some of this is due to the fact that Vis overlaps very closely with the graphics research in which UNC is heavily invested, but it also seems to be true in general... It's useful having people to call in just about any organization with the least bit of graphics going on.

Seattle weather report: dreary, overcast, wind picking up, not raining right this second... but there's an offsite, somewhat outdoor reception tonight, so it may just be saving up for a meteorological onslaught the moment people get on the boat.

Tessellation pictures

I have promised at least three separate LJ-connected people URLs for origami tessellation galleries, so the simplest way to do that is to post them here:

My own (old) gallery

My own newer gallery

Chris Palmer's gallery - he came up with most of the designs. I'm following his work, which in turn builds on work done by Shuzo Fujimoto et al.

Oops. It looks as if Chris has hidden away his pictures. I think that's a shame. It's really beautiful work. 9thmoon, erish, sylke, contact me privately if you're interested and I'll see if I can point you at pictures of the stuff that he's done that I haven't.
