House update: first glitch [May. 8th, 2004|01:51 pm]
[Current Mood |bemused]

One of the circuit breakers has died: it tripped and won't reset. It's possible (but unlikely, I'm told) that it's a fault in the circuit rather than the breaker. In either event, fixing it will require that an electrician come out, which will apparently happen on Monday. They won't come any earlier than that unless it's a huge emergency.

This particular breaker took out the lights in the garage as well as the garage door opener. Like most, it has a manual release... which is fortunate, considering that I had the car parked in there.

I figure that this is a brand new house. We're certain to have some number of minor problems to work out over the next year or so. This is just the first.

When you have time you can try unplugging all devices (like the door opener) and seeing if it will reset. If you can get the breaker back on by removing devices, that narrows the problem space considerably and might change who you would call.

My breakers here must be turned all the way off for a second or two before turning back on, and won't go from tripped (middle) to on directly.

I tried that. The only thing I couldn't unplug was the garage door opener, and that because I don't have a stepladder. No luck.

I'm not entirely sure why this thing would fail now instead of in the previous week or so while it was being exercised more.

Oh yeah! Gigantor 4 way folding ladder, normal 6 or so foot ladder, and stepladder were all things we got at home despot within a month of owning our house. Possibly even within a week, but I don't remember for sure!
